FAQ

Mains vs alternative power
It is still far cheaper in NZ to be connected to mains power rather than alternative power.  However remote locations that are a reasonable distance from the grid are becoming more cost effective when compared to the connection charges.  There are still sacrifices to living with alternative power installations ie. electric ovens, air conditioning, electric toasters and jugs although with a larger investment these are even possible.

Which batteries are best?
Deep cycle batteries are the only type you should be connecting.  Starting batteries are constructed of thin plates so discharging these batteries on a regular basis will destroy them very quickly.

Why monocrystalline solar panels?
They are more efficient for the area covered ie. you get more power out of them compared to polycrystalline solar panels.  Although great headway has been made in recent times, we will keep you informed.

How low should I discharge my batteries?
You should never go below 50% state of charge when cycling your deep cycle batteries.  The higher you maintain the voltage, the longer your batteries will last.
